Lead and nickel are released from nickel-plated brass plumbing. This example illustrates how toxic metals can be exposed from alloys through the effects of corrosion. In this case, the scale formed on a faucet contained >500 ppm lead and >5% nickel. The resulting heavy metal salts are much more available to be ingested and absorbed compared to the metals in the intact alloys.
